Maybe you're a long-time fan of Wendell Dipmier and his accidental heroism.
Maybe you just stumbled in here, coffee in one hand, curiosity in the other.
Maybe you downloaded the Alpha rules because you like free stuff and the word “alpha” makes you feel like a powerful beast. (Fair enough.)

But whoever you are…

It means you’re part of the dream now.

See, The Hero Within isn’t just a game.

It’s a doorway.

It’s a knock on the frame of your imagination—a call to put on a sword (or kitchen ladle, depending on your character) and shape a world with your choices. It’s the chance to build someone brave, or broken, or cunning, or ridiculous, and watch them grow in ways you didn’t expect.

Or explode. That happens too.

This Alpha version?
It’s early. Rough around the edges. Just enough rules to keep the chairs from wobbling, but not enough to keep anyone from falling out of them entirely.

It’s going to confuse some people.
It might frustrate others.
But it's meant to start the fire, not control it.

This game was designed to be played, broken, and rebuilt with you.
To become something none of us could make alone.
That’s why Jaime kept it light. Why I insisted we open it up before it was polished. Because heroes aren’t born in comfort—they’re forged in chaos, laughter, and hastily drawn maps on napkins.

So here’s what I ask of you:

Play. Even if you don’t know all the rules.
Explore. Even if the road ahead is foggy.
Tell stories. Especially the messy ones.
Take notes. Good, bad, weird—we want it all.
Dream with us. Because this isn’t the end of a project—it’s the beginning of a world.

And when the final game is complete, with its finished art, balanced mechanics, full lore, and thick binding—know that you were one of the ones who helped shape it.

The Hero Within RPG 13: Are Discipline Points the Best Way to Shape Your Hero?

In The Hero Within, Discipline Points (DP) are a unique currency used to enhance skills, master magic, and shape a character’s journey.

Unlike traditional XP systems, DP rewards creativity, problem-solving, and survival rather than just combat victories.

But here’s the big question: Is this the best way to handle progression? Should DP be the primary method for character growth, or should there be other ways to develop skills and abilities?

Before finalizing this system, we need your input! Let’s dive into what Discipline Points do, how they work, and whether they should remain the foundation of progression.

🔹 What Are Discipline Points?

Discipline Points are earned through gameplay, roleplaying, and trials, rewarding players for playing their character well and making smart choices. DP can be spent on enhancing class abilities, magic mastery, and unlocking new skills.

Here’s how they work:

Earned (1-3 per session) based on performance, creativity, and survival.
Voted MVP Bonus: At the end of each session, players vote for the Most Valuable PC, who gains an extra DP.
Spent Outside of Gameplay: DP can be used at the start or end of a session, but not during gameplay (except in rare cases like trials).
Unlimited Accumulation: No DP cap—players can save up and spend as they see fit.

Community Question:

Does DP feel like a rewarding way to track character growth?
Should players have more control over how they earn DP?

🛠️ Spending Discipline Points – Is This the Right System?

Currently, DP is used to enhance characters in meaningful ways:

Skill Growth: Improve or unlock class-based skills.
Magic Expansion: Mägo and other magic users can create custom spells.
Trial Rewards: Successfully passing a trial allows immediate DP spending as a reward.

This system allows player-driven progression, but does it provide enough variety? Should DP be the only way to grow, or should leveling, story progression, or other mechanics play a role?

Community Question:

Should DP be the primary method of character advancement, or should it be paired with other progression systems?
Are there areas of character growth that should not be tied to DP?

⚖️ Balancing DP – Should There Be Limits?

One advantage of DP is its flexibility—but should it have restrictions to prevent unbalanced progression?

Some potential balancing ideas:

Caps on Spending: A limit on how much DP can be used at once.
Class-Specific Costs: Some skills might require more DP based on class difficulty.
Scaling Costs: The more powerful a skill, the higher the DP cost.

Community Question:

Should DP spending have limits, or should players have full freedom?
Would a tiered system for spending DP (higher-cost abilities require greater investment) work better?

🎖️ Player Choice – Should DP Be Earned Differently?

Currently, DP is awarded by the GM and through player voting. But should there be more ways to gain DP?

Possible alternatives:

Automatic DP for Major Story Events (boss fights, discoveries, heroic deeds).
Roleplay-Based Rewards (great character moments, deep storytelling, or meaningful decisions).
Skill-Specific DP Gains (using a skill repeatedly might grant DP in that area).

In The Hero Within, character progression isn’t just about numbers—it’s about growth, evolution, and the journey of becoming a legend.

Whether through combat, skillful problem-solving, or pivotal story moments, characters should develop in ways that feel rewarding and meaningful.

But here’s the big question: How should leveling up work? Should XP be the main driver, or should milestones dictate progression? What should leveling up actually give players?

Before making final decisions, we want to hear from you! Let’s dive into the discussion of progression and leveling in The Hero Within.

🔹 XP vs. Milestones – Which Works Best?

Most RPGs handle character growth through Experience Points (XP) or Milestone Progression—but which is the better system for The Hero Within?

XP-Based Leveling: Players earn XP through combat, skill use, and roleplaying. Once they accumulate enough, they level up.
Milestone-Based Leveling: Characters advance when they complete significant story moments, challenges, or personal achievements.
Hybrid System: A blend of both—XP for smaller improvements, milestones for major growth.

Community Question:

Should leveling be based on XP, milestones, or a hybrid system?
What types of achievements should trigger milestone progression?

🌟 What Should Players Gain When They Level Up?

Leveling up should feel rewarding and impactful. In The Hero Within, leveling could grant:

Beyond basic progression, The Hero Within could feature special trials or challenges that grant significant rewards, such as:

Class Trials: Warriors mastering a legendary combat technique, Mägo unlocking deeper magical secrets, Tinkerers crafting a revolutionary invention.
Epic Feats: Overcoming a legendary challenge—slaying a dragon, brokering peace between warring factions, or surviving an impossible battle.
Unique Story Moments: Gaining a powerful artifact, receiving a title, or permanently changing the game world through a heroic act.

Should leveling sometimes require a special challenge or trial?
What types of “epic moments” should provide special progression rewards?

⚖️ Balancing Progression – How Fast Should Heroes Grow?

Progression needs to feel earned but not frustrating. Too fast, and challenges feel meaningless. Too slow, and players may feel stuck.

Some options for balance include:

Pacing Systems: Ensuring that XP/Milestones progress at a steady, rewarding rate.
Team Progression: Allowing the entire group to advance together instead of individually.
Level Caps & Soft Resets: Preventing players from outpacing the game’s difficulty too quickly.

As we continue developing The Hero Within, one class remains in question—the Wayfarer. Unlike the Warrior, the Mägo, or the Healer, the Wayfarer isn’t bound to a battlefield role.

Instead, they thrive on exploration, adaptability, and survival. But should such a class exist? Or should these traits be woven into all classes instead of standing alone?

Before making a final decision, we want to hear from you! Is there enough depth to justify a dedicated Wayfarer class, or should its essence be integrated into other archetypes? Let’s explore the possibilities together.

🔹 The Wayfarer Class Progression

Wayfarers are masters of survival, exploration, and adaptability. Their journey follows this progression:

Explorer (Stage 1): A seasoned traveler, skilled in navigation, foraging, and endurance.
Wanderer (Stage 2): A worldly adventurer, able to read environments, track enemies, and improvise in difficult situations.
Wayfarer (Stage 3): A legendary nomad, capable of thriving in any land, uncovering secrets, and forging deep connections with the world.

Unlike other classes that focus on combat, Wayfarers specialize in mobility, knowledge, and adaptability.

Community Question:

Does this progression make Wayfarers feel distinct enough from other classes?
Should exploration and survival abilities be a class or a set of universal skills?

🌍 What Role Should a Wayfarer Play?

Wayfarers are not traditional warriors or spellcasters—they bring utility, knowledge, and survival instincts to a group. Some potential roles include:

Pathfinder – The first to explore unknown areas, revealing dangers and hidden paths.
Survivalist – Thrives in harsh conditions, finding food, shelter, and safe routes.
Diplomat – A traveler who understands different cultures, easing tensions and brokering alliances.
Jack-of-All-Trades – Not a master of one skill, but able to adapt to any situation.

Should the Wayfarer specialize in one of these roles, or remain a flexible generalist?
Would it be more interesting to make Wayfarer abilities available to all classes instead?

🚶‍♂️ Movement & Mobility – Should the Wayfarer Be Built Around Freedom?

Unlike heavily armored warriors or stationary magic users, Wayfarers thrive on constant movement and adaptability. Possible mechanics include:

Evasion & Agility: Able to dodge, escape, or reposition quickly.
Environmental Mastery: Bonuses when navigating forests, mountains, deserts, or ruins.
Travel Bonds: Able to call upon allies, contacts, or old favors from previous journeys.
Wilderness Magic: Not traditional spellcasting, but the ability to harness nature’s flow for guidance and protection.

Should the Wayfarer focus on physical movement, or should their skills be more about knowledge and adaptability?
What unique abilities would make this class feel exciting and distinct?

⚖️ Balancing the Wayfarer – Should It Stand Alone?

A major concern with the Wayfarer is balance—does it offer enough mechanical depth and unique gameplay to be its own class, or would it be better as a subclass or skill tree?

Standalone Class: A fully developed progression path with unique abilities.

Protector (Stage 2): A seasoned warrior who specializes in damage mitigation and battlefield awareness.
Sentinel (Stage 3): A legendary bulwark, nearly unbreakable, with unmatched defensive mastery.

Each stage enhances the Defender’s ability to shield allies, withstand punishment, and control enemy movement.

When it comes to rolling dice in tabletop RPGs, one mechanic has stood the test of time: rolling under a target number.

In many traditional systems, a lower roll is better—but what if we flipped that on its head?

In The Hero Within, we're challenging this long-standing convention, and we want your thoughts.

For years, RPGs using d100 (percentile dice) have ruled that rolling 01 is a perfect success, while 00 (or 100) is the worst possible failure. But something about that has always felt... unintuitive.

Shouldn’t bigger numbers mean bigger success?

Shouldn’t that epic, once-in-a-lifetime roll of 100 be a moment of triumph?

Let’s dive into the idea of rolling high instead of rolling low—and why it might make for a more engaging game experience.

🔹 The Case for Rolling Over Instead of Rolling Under

Most TTRPGs with percentile dice have players roll under their stat to succeed. If you have a 60 in Strength, you need to roll 60 or lower on a d100. This method ensures that stronger characters succeed more often, but it can feel counterintuitive.

Instead, what if success meant rolling higher rather than lower? The GM assigns a Target Number (TN) based on the task’s difficulty, and players roll above that TN to succeed.

Here’s why this makes sense:

✔ Bigger Rolls Feel More Epic: It just feels right that rolling a 100 is the ultimate success rather than the ultimate failure.

✔ Easier for New Players: Most games and media reinforce that "high rolls = good," making it more intuitive for new players.

✔ Flexible GM Control: The GM can assign difficulty dynamically instead of rigid pass/fail cutoffs.

✔ Encourages Excitement: Players love aiming for high numbers rather than dreading them!

🎲 The Hero Within’s Rolling System

Instead of rolling under an attribute, The Hero Within flips the norm:

Roll d100 – Higher is Always Better.

A natural 100 (00) is an incredible success that boosts your hero permanently!

Rolling for Attributes: Too Much, Too Little, or Just Right?

In The Hero Within, attributes are generated by rolling 2d6+4 for each stat. This ensures every hero has a solid foundation, with scores ranging from 6 to 16.

This method avoids the frustration of weak rolls while keeping things exciting.
It still allows variety in character strengths and weaknesses.

Attribute Caps by Race: Limiting or Encouraging Growth?

Each race has natural strengths and weaknesses, represented by attribute caps. For example:

Kutollum: High Might and Constitution, but lower Influence and Coordination.
Gentre (Gnomes): High Coordination and Reason, but less Might.
Nocturi: High Intelligence and Awareness, but lower Constitution.

But here’s the twist—you can break through your racial cap! Rolling a natural 1 in skill checks earns you +1 Attribute Point, allowing growth beyond your limits over time.

How Should Attribute Growth Work?

Okay my kindred,….here we go!

We talked about making a game.

Today is the day.

I have zero experience in doing this live in front of people, so be kind.

Read and digest the material below, then leave your feedback, input, suggestions and perspectives in the comments. I’m going to take what I’m working on and lay it out, right here in articles over time, for you to chew on and spit it back at me.

Most of this is going to read like it’s finished, but it’s not. I’ve been working on the starting rules for a while now. It’s NOT been tested yet, so there will be flaws, holes, and possibly contradictions. & (nice avatar, Benjamin!) have volunteered to meet me in real life to play test soon =).

This game isn’t just about winning. It’s about becoming the best version of yourself, learning what it means to be a hero, and, most importantly, having fun along the way. So grab your dice, gather your friends, and get ready to embark on an adventure like no other.

What You’ll Need to Play

To play The Hero Within, you’ll need a few essentials:

A set of polyhedral dice. These dice come in various shapes and numbers of sides, such as d4 (four-sided), d6 (six-sided), d8 (eight-sided), d10 (ten-sided—you’ll need two of these), d12 (twelve-sided), and d20 (twenty-sided). Dice can be shared between players and the GM.
Character sheets to track your hero’s abilities, health, and progress.
A group of friends (at least one person to be the Game Master and 2-5 players).
A shared sense of adventure and a willingness to let your imagination run wild!

Optional, but fun to have:

Coins for Luck mechanics.
Maps, miniatures, or tokens to help visualize the action.
Snacks (because adventuring is hungry work).

How to Play: An Overview

At its core, The Hero Within is a storytelling game. You and your friends will create characters, take on the roles of heroes, and embark on adventures crafted by the Game Master (GM). Together, you’ll explore the world of Wanted Hero, face challenges, solve puzzles, and fight epic battles.

But here’s the twist: in this game, the story is shaped by your choices. There are no pre-determined outcomes—what happens next depends on what you and your fellow players decide to do. It’s a collaboration between you, your friends, and the world you’re exploring.

1. Creating Your Hero

Your journey begins by creating a hero—a character you’ll embody throughout the game. This involves choosing a race, a class, and rolling for attributes. Your hero’s abilities and background will determine how they interact with the world, from their combat prowess to their skills in negotiation or magic.

Don’t worry if this sounds complicated—it’s actually a lot of fun! You’ll get to decide who your character is, what they’re good at, and what drives them to become a hero. And if you’re new to this, the game provides plenty of guidance to help you along the way.

2. Playing the Game

Once your characters are ready, the adventure begins. The GM will set the scene, describing the world and the challenges you’ll face. Your job is to decide what your hero does in response. Do you charge into battle? Try to talk your way out of a sticky situation? Or maybe you use your wits to come up with a clever solution?

You’ll describe your actions, and then roll dice to see if you succeed. The percentile dice (d100) are your go-to tools for resolving actions. Your goal is to roll under your relevant skill or attribute to succeed. The lower the roll, the better the outcome.

But here’s the fun part—Luck can change everything. Whether it’s avoiding disaster or tipping the scales in your favor, your Luck Points are a wildcard you can play when you need it most.

4. Facing Challenges

The GM will guide you through these situations, providing opportunities for both heroic deeds and personal growth. Every challenge is a chance to learn more about your character, your friends, and what it means to be a hero.

5. Gaining Experience and Growing

As you progress through the game, your hero will grow in power and ability. By completing quests, overcoming obstacles, and making meaningful choices, you’ll earn Discipline Points (DP) that you can use to level up your skills, unlock new abilities, and even create custom spells.

But remember, being a hero isn’t just about gaining power—it’s about making the right choices, helping others, and staying true to your values.

For New Players:

If this is your first time playing a tabletop roleplaying game, welcome! The Hero Within is designed to be accessible and fun for everyone, regardless of experience. Don’t worry about getting everything perfect—just focus on having a good time, and the rest will follow.
